Awards and Honors in the month of January

Prince Mahidol Award 2015 conferred in Bangkok
      Prince Mahidol Award 2015 was conferred upon Professor Morton Mower and Sir Michael Marmot for outstanding achievements in medicine and public health worldwide.
      The award was presented at the Grand Palace in Bangkok by the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on behalf of the King of Thailand Bhumibol Adulyadej, who couldn’t attend the ceremony due to ill health.

Amlendu Tiwari, Om Nagar get Jananpith’s Navlekhan award
       Two new Hindi writers Amlendu Tiwari and Om Nagar have been chosen for the 11th Navlekhan award of the Bharatiya Jnanpith. 
       The decision to confer the award on Tiwari for his novel ‘Parityakt’ and on Nagar for his non-fictional prose ‘Nib Ke Cheere Se’ was taken unanimously by a selection panel headed by senior writer and journalist Madhusudan Anand.
       The prize includes Rs 50,000 cash along with a certificate of merit and an idol of Vagdevi each.

Naresh Bedi awarded V Shantaram Life Time Acheivement Award at MIFF
       Veteran wildlife filmmaker Naresh Bedi has been conferred with the V Shantaram Life Time Acheivement Award at 14th edition of 2016 Mumbai International Festival (MIFF), Mumbai.
       He was honoured for his outstanding contribution to wildlife filmmaking and is credited with filming several rare wildlife moments. Bedi’s film ‘Cherub of the Mist’ based on the life of two red pandas was the opening film of this edition of MIFF.

Actress Waheeda Rehman honoured with special award
       Veteran actress Waheeda Rehman was honoured with a special award for her contribution to the film industry as curtains came down on Yashwant International Film Festival.
       The 6th Yashwant International Film Festival-2016 is a joint venture of Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan and Pune Film Foundation.

Nisid Hajari won 2016 William E. Colby Award for Best Military Book
       Midnights FuriesNisid Hajari won the 2016 William E. Colby Award for his book, Midnight’s Furies: The Deadly Legacy of India’s Partition.
       Hajari will be presented with the award and honorarium at Norwich University, the USA in April 2016.

Indian activist Henri Tiphagne selected for Amnesty International Human Rights Award 2016
       Henri TiphagneIndian lawyer and human rights defender Henri Tiphagne was selected for the 8th Human Rights Award by Amnesty International Germany.
       The award is a recognition of Tiphagne’s exceptional commitment to human rights. He will be conferred with the award at an official ceremony on 25 April 2016 at the Maxim Gorki Theatre in Berlin, Germany.

Cottalango Leon selected for 2016 Technical Achievement Award of Academy of Motion Pictures
       Cottalango Leon, a person of Indian origin, was selected for the 2016 Technical Achievement Award of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
       Leon won the award under the Scientific and Technical Achievements category for the design, engineering and continuous development of Sony Pictures Image works Itview along with his two team members J Robert Ray and Sam Richards. It is a tool used only within Sony Image works.

Jeevan Raksha Padak Awards 2015 announced
       President Pranab Mukherjee approved the conferment of Jeevan Raksha Padak Series of Awards 2015 on 50 persons.
       These series of gallantry awards were instituted in the year 1961.

Prince Narula- The winner of Big Boss 9
       Prince Narula finally won the Bigg Boss 9. The final winner defeated Rishabh Sinha, Mandana Karimi and Rochelle Rao.
       Being favourite among audience, this man makes it to the final list and consequently won also.

Rahul Thakkar won an Oscar Award for technical achievement
       Person of Indian Origin Rahul Thakkar was named as one of winners of the Scientific and Technical Awards given by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, famously called Oscar Awards.
       Rahul Thakkar will be presented with the Technical Achievement Award for his contribution to cinema through "groundbreaking design".

GOI announced the National Bravery Awards 2015
       Overall, twenty five children (3 girls and 22 boys) were selected for the National Bravery Awards 2015.
       The Award Winners has been selected by a committee comprised of representatives from various Ministries and Departments, NGOs as well as Office Bearers of Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW).

Dr Jancy James selected for Prof MV Pylee Award for the Distinguished Academician of India
       Dr Jancy James, the first woman Vice Chancellor of Kerala, was selected for the Prof MV Pylee Award for the Distinguished Academician of India.
       The award was instituted by Cochin University of Science and Technology in the name of MV Pylee.

Anuradha Roy Wins $50,000 DSC Prize For ‘Sleeping on Jupiter’
       Indian writer Anuradha Roy has won the prestigious $50,000 DSC Prize for South Asian Literature for her novel ‘Sleeping on Jupiter’ at the Galle Literary Festival in Sri Lanka.
       Ms Roy was awarded the prize and a unique trophy by Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The Look of Silence won award at 9th Annual Cinema Eye Honours
        Director Joshua Oppenheimer’s “The Look of Silence” has won the Top Documentary Award at the 9th Annual Cinema Eye Honours.
        The film is based on the examination of the Indonesian genocide of the 1960s.
        The film has also won the Directing Award for Oppenheimer and the Outstanding Production honour for Signe Byrge Sørensen.

UNICEF presented David Beckham with Danny Kaye Humanitarian Leadership Award
        Football Player David Beckham has been conferred with the Danny Kaye Humanitarian Leadership Award at the sixth biennial UNICEF Ball in Los Angeles.
        Sir Elton John and David Furnish presented the award to Beckham at the black-tie gala event, honouring him for his tireless work to save and improve the lives of children around the world.

Subhashini Vasanth honoured with Neerja Bhanot Award
        The Neerja Bhanot Pan Am Trust will be conferring the Neerja Bhanot award on Subhashini Vasanth of Bengaluru in Chandigarh.
        The award will be presented by Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor, who is playing the lead role in biopic “Neerja”.
        The trust said that “This is the 24th year of the annual award which comprises Rs 1,50,000, a citation and a trophy.”

EPFO wins National Award on e-Governance for UAN
        The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation has won the National Award on e-Governance 2015-16 for launching the Universal Account Number (UAN).
        The UAN facility enables workers to transfer their provident fund deposits while switching jobs anywhere in India easily.
        The EPFO won the gold award in the ‘innovative use of technology in e-governance’ category and the retirement body will get a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh.

Denzel Washington receives Cecil B DeMille Award
        Denzel Washington has been conferred with the honourable Cecil B DeMille award, which honors extraordinary contributions to the entertainment world, at the 2016 Golden Globes.

Poet Balkrishna Garg conferred with 2015 Harikrishna Devsare Baalsahitya Award
        Veteran poet Balkrishna Garg was honoured with the second edition of Harikrishna Devsare Baalsahitya Award 2015 for his collection of poems for children titled ‘Baal Geet’.
        He was conferred with the award by Sahitya Akademi President Vishwanath Prasad Tiwari and National Book Trust Chairman Baldeo Bhai Sharm.

GM Rao gets Bulandh Bharath award
        GMR Group Chairman G.M. Rao was honoured with the ‘Bulandh Bharath’ Award for his exemplary contributions towards nation building.

Raghuram Rajan conferred Central Banker of the Year Award
        The Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan was felicitated with the Central Banker of the Year Award (Global and Asia Pacific) for 2016.
        The award was given by the Financial Times Group's monthly publication The Banker.

Priyanka Chopra bags award at People’s Choice Awards for ‘Quantico’
        Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra has bagged the favourite actress in new TV series honour at the 2016 People Choice Awards for her performance of an FBI recruit on American show Quantico.

Syed Kirmani conferred with 2015 Col CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award
        Former Cricketer Syed Kirmani was honoured with the Col CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award in Mumbai (Maharashtra) for his contribution to Indian cricket.
        He was presented with the award by the President of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Shashank Manohar at the BCCI’s annual award function held in Mumbai.

Costa Book Awards 2015 announced
        The Winners of Costa Book Awards 2015 were announced.
        As per the official announcement, writer Kate Atkinson’s novel A God in Ruins won the Costa Book Awards 2015 under the category Costa Novel Award 2015.
        The Author Kate Atkinson won this award for the second time in last three years. In 2013, she received the prestigious Costa Book Award for her novel Life After Life.

Corp Bank gets NPCI awards
        Corporation Bank has bagged three awards at the ‘National Payments Excellence Awards 2015’ event recently. The function was organised by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
        The bank said in a release that these awards were instituted for recognition of exceptional performance of member banks.

Vocalist Sanjay Subrahmanyam conferred 2015 Sangita Kalanidhi award
        Foremost south Indian classical vocalists Sanjay Subrahmanyam has conferred with prestigious 2015 Sangita Kalanidhi award.

        The prestigious award was bestowed upon him by renowned mathematician Manjul Bhargava at 89th annual conference of the Madras Music Academy in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
